Bacon, Egg & Cheese Please
When you're not eating a bagel for breakfast-on-the-go in NYC, you sure as hell better be eating a breakfast sandwich. That's because a few of the greatest breakfast sandwiches on the globe are located here. Three in particular that come to mind can be found at Daily Provisions, Golden Diner and Frankel's Delicatessen.
Everyone seems to be flocking here for the crullers. I’m flocking here for “The Love Child”. The incredibly flaky, ultra buttery, cream cheese-stuffed everything bagel croissant at Daily Provisions would be pretty fantastic on its own. But slice it in half, add an oozing fried egg and extra thick slabs of crisp bacon and you have a breakfast sandwich you’ll be dreaming about for days to come.
The concept of Golden Diner doesn’t make any sense. A brand new, old school-style diner in the heart of Chinatown; serving up matzo ball soup, a chicken katsu club and matcha chiffon cake for dessert. But somehow it works, and it’s glorious. A major part of this glory is their signature Chinatown Egg Sando. So often, the bread on a sandwich is neglected but not here. The melt-in-your-mouth scallion milk bun is the most perfect carrier for the cheesy, soft scrambled eggs inside. Finish it with a homemade CRISPY HASHBROWN PATTY and I’m sold. My only regret here is not adding bacon too.
BEC is basically official in the New York dictionary these days. So what happens when a Jewish Brooklyn deli takes it to a PEC? Pastrami, egg and cheese that is - not Prince Edward County, though I wish it was available in Prince Edward County. Anyways. The PEC at Frankel’s is to die for. The thick cubes of lean, tender, spice-coated pastrami are some of the best I’ve had, and they really are the star of this sandwich. So who says you can’t throw them with some egg and cheese on a fluffy challah roll? My only qualm with this is the choice of American cheese here. I should have opted for the available Swiss option or, better yet, a sharp cheddar if they had it. Either way, this sandwich is stellar.
